Pixelflut — Multiplayer Canvas 🌊

Pixelflut is a computer networking protocol to draw pixels on a screen. The name is German for “pixel flood”.

What does that look like in practice? On the right you can view some old recordings.

It is great fun to both send memes to a screen that is filled collectively and to write the software for it. If you haven’t done so, you can learn a bunch of things about performance, networking sockets and graphics.

Getting started

See here to get started with Pixelflut. If you came here from a particular event, your server operator should have told you on how to reach the server and what server features you can use. If you are interested in existing clients and servers, you should check out our collection of awesome Pixelflut projects.

Protocol specification

We are working on a specification over here: pixelflut/pixelflut-rfc. The goal is to publish this specification as an IETF RFC. If that won’t be possible, we’ll still publish an official specification on this page that everyone can reference.

The Howto page contains a more informal description which is enough for beginners.

Why this domain?

This domain is operated by a Pixelflut interest group within the CCC, but it is not the “official” resource on Pixelflut in any way. See also the FAQ.

This domain is however intended for creating subdomains that point to a currently running server. Please ask Eloy or kleines Filmröllchen for a new DNS record, see the FAQ.

Upcoming Pixelflut events and subdomains:

This domain improves accessibility of event servers and Pixelflut-related information. It is in no way a requirement to use this domain to call something a Pixelflut.
